Acupuncture Study

PAANZ encourages physiotherapists to commence their acupuncture education in New Zealand by studying for a ‘Postgraduate Certificate in Acupuncture’ at Auckland University of Technology (AUT), or Otago University.
There are further acupuncture qualifications that can be attained at both Universities by following acupuncture pathways, such as Postgraduate Diploma, or Master of Health Science in Acupuncture.

Postgraduate acupuncture study at AUT can be undertaken in Traditional Chinese Acupuncture, or Western Acupuncture. An outline of both of these Postgraduate Certificate level acupuncture studies is detailed below.

Western Acupuncture

Develops the practical applied aspects of acupuncture examination and treatment techniques with reference to clinical and experimental research in Western acupuncture

588723 – Theoretical Concepts of Western Acupuncture (20) - Enables students to explore and validate knowledge in Western Acupuncture by the critical review of current literature, research and practice.


Traditional Chinese Acupuncture

588712 - Traditional Chinese Acupuncture (20) - Develop knowledge of the pathophysiology and diagnostics of Traditional Chinese Acupuncture and apply these principles to treatment in a specialist acupuncture practice. Develops knowledge base through analysis and critique of historical and current research literature and its application in clinical situations.

588713 - Theoretical Concepts of Chinese Acupuncture (20) - Explore, challenge, validate and develop knowledge of acupuncture by undertaking a critical review of the history and the major theoretical and philosophical foundations of acupuncture practice. This includes some of the cultural, social, economic, political, ethical and legal factors that shape its practice reality.

589729 - Traditional Chinese Acupuncture Practicum (20) - Critiques and analyses acupuncture practice to develop and defend one's own practice. Demonstrates safe and competent acupuncture practice.

Otago University

Acupuncture is available as an endorsement for the Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma of Master of Physiotherapy.

PHTX510 - Research Methods - 30 points - Semester 1 - Research design, elevation, survey and qualitative methods.

PHTX547 - Acupuncture in Physiotherapy - 30 points - Full year - This paper will provide practising physiotherapists with a deeper level of knowledge, competence and skill in the use of acupuncture. It incorporates the theoretical basis of acupuncture and aims to develop the ability to critically review and evaluate current acupuncture theory and practice, and apply this information appropriately in the evaluation and management of patients.

Papers for the Postgraduate Diploma in Physiotherapy (Acupuncture): Papers above plus:

PHTX501 - Biomedical Science in Physiotherapy - 30 points - Semester 1 - Integration of the applied, medical and clinical sciences that underpin the philosophy, examination and management practices in physiotherapy. Students will study topics appropriate to their clinical specialisation.

PHTX530 - Theoretical Constructs in Clinical Practice - 30 points - Semester 2 - Clinical practice structured to extend the physiotherapist's theoretical knowledge and reasoning skills and to develop an advanced level of competence and critical evaluation in their specialised fields of practice.

Papers for the Master of Physiotherapy (Acupuncture): Papers above plus:

PHTX590 - Dissertation - 60 points - Full year - The dissertation may comprise the design and implementation of a small research project, a case/case series, or a data-based clinical review under the supervision of a member of staff. A substantive report to an approved format will be the output from this paper.

PHTY545 - Special Topic - 30 points - Semester 1 - Study of clinical theory and practice in a specific area of physiotherapy.

PHTX550 - Research Project - 30 points - Semester 2 - A supervised, original research project of up to 10,000 words in a field of Physiotherapy usually applied to the student's area of practice, for example; a systematic review, pilot study, audit or case study.

MSMX711 - Pain Assessment - 15 points - Semester 2 - Clinical pain assessment in the context of New Zealand society; principles, procedures and physical resources. The economic and health effect of pain on the New Zealand workforce.

MSMX708 - Introduction to Pain Management - 15 points - Semester 2 - Clinical pain assessment in the context of New Zealand society; principles, procedures and physical resources. The economic and health effect of pain on the New Zealand workforce.
