I have been a member of the PAANZ Education team since 1996 and tutored on the Introductory and Pre Assessment (Upskilling) courses.
I qualified in Northern Ireland and since 1995 have worked in Private Practice in Dunedin.
I have been a part time lecturer at the School of Physiotherapy, Otago University since 2004 on the PostgraduateCertificate endorsed in Acupuncture course.
My interest in acupuncture is mainly in the western/scientific paradigm but I am constantly intrigued by the TCM
principles and how we can integrate them into our treatment plans.
I completed my acupuncture training with PAPMA (PAANZ) in 1991 after graduating as a physiotherapist from ATI in 1978 and iInitially registered as a physiotherapy acupuncturist in October 1992 some 17 years ago.
Started teaching for PAANZ (PAPMA) in 1996, on the TCM part of the programme and revision day.
Then as a tutor teaching the following PAANZ Post basic courses:
Trigger point
Shoulder day
TCM day
Case study days.
I also taught the University acupuncture courses for AUT in 2000, 2001, and Otago in 2004.

Gabrielle- is a Physiotherapist with the special interest in Traditional
Chinese Medicine living and working in Paeroa.
In 1980 she started learning Qi
Gong and Tai Chi Chuan and has been a Tai Chi and Qi Gong teacher since 1983 in
Germany and New Zealand. After graduation in 1990 as a Physiotherapist she
spent time in China studying Acupuncture and got introduced to Chinese herbs
and further techniques of Qi Gong. As a health practitioner she uses Qi Gong to
self regulate her own Qi, as well for her clients. Ongoing study in Qi Gong and Tai Chi
has been part of her life until today.
Rielle is running the Zen Tao Centre for Tai Chi and Qi Gong in Paeroa.
Currently she is teaching 4 classes a week including the ACC Tai Chi Falls prevention program.
Qi Gong for health is an essential component of all classes and complementary in treatments.
I did my acupuncture teacher training 1995 and started teaching the PAPMA and PAANZ programmes. Because TCM has always been a passion of mine, I have gravitated towards the teaching in that area of acupuncture. When Otago university took on our PAANZ course I transitioned with the rest of the ‘team,’ who were interested in keeping the basic course as close as possible to how it had been run, as we knew it worked and was what the membership wanted.
Because my interest has always been with the traditional, I have gone to virtually every course that Drs Ted Pearson & Gayle O’Duffy have run for physios. One year a post conference workshop was about Japanese acupuncture so I learned some Manaka and the basics of the gentle approach that the Japanese style offers. In 2004 I did the Toyohari Japanese style acupuncture course run by Dr Ted Peason, which included trips to Melbourne to be taught by the Japanese Sensei themselves, as they are very particular about keeping their ‘brand’ true. This means we are not able to actually teach the Toyohari style as such, but their approach has broadened what I can offer into a TCM course. Since finishing the Toyohari training I have attended two of the ‘conferences’ that are run in Tokyo.
I have also added cosmetic acupuncture to what I do in my practice, but the teacher has requested that we don’t teach her style – there are other protocols being taught both here & in Australia that other physios have done without that restriction.
In the last few years I have added Meridian Tapping or Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) to my tool box. Mainly because I now have a diploma in Life Coaching & I find the tapping is a very useful adjunct for any conditions that we treat with acupuncture. And also things that we may not have thought could be helpful – I’ve even got family using it with their son with ADHD. At the 2011 conference in Auckland I ran one of the workshops on tapping. There seemed to be enough interest for me to run another one – probably half/whole day. If you are interested, please approach PAANZ to place your name on a list for a future offering.
